Inside New York (Inside New York, 2000)
Published in Paperback by Inside New York (June, 1999)
Author: Gabe Fried
Average review score:

Great for travellers
I just came back from a trip to NYC and this book was the best guidebook I found. I loved the sections on each neighborhood, which tells the history, the "must-sees", "cheap thrills" and restaurants. We could take a subway to a neighborhood, sit down in a park and have the area at our fingertips.

newcomer to new york
I bought all of the travel books to New York when I first arrived here and this was the only guidebook customized by neighborhood - which really made it the most useful. It even comes with a plastic wallet-size subway map! I would have bought the book just for the card that I always keep in my wallet

Manhattan Postcard Book
I hope every real view looks like the picture

Manhattan postcards by Jon Orthner
Jon Orthner captures some fabulous images of Manhattan. There is one picture of the Statue of Liberty at night overlooking the World Trade Center. In wake of the events on September 11th it is a emotional image. It is worth the price of the book for that one postcard.

Musical New York: An Informal Guide to Its History and Legends and a Walking Tour of Its Sites and Landmarks
Published in Paperback by Camino Books Inc. (June, 1999)
Author: Carol J. Binkowski
Average review score:

A good guidebook to out-of-the-way places
Carol Binkowski has put together a comprehensive and enjoyable guidebook. Her exhaustive list of places in New York that have significance in the city's musical history makes absorbing reading, even if one has no intention of actually visiting all of these places. The opening chapters on New York's musical history are necessarily somewhat superficial, but in-depth research is not the point here. This volume is thus a perfect reference for the music lover who wants to do a walking tour of significant places and locations in the Big Apple.

Comprehensive and highlights New York in a wonderful way
The author brings to life so many sights in New York in such detail. She cross-references sights so you can see how they relate to each other. I did not know that some of these locations existed. This book is useful for the tourist or for anyone that wants to learn about musical New York. The book is divided in such a way that you can pick an area and explore to your delight. She also includes historical facts that are not necessarily known by most people. Highly recommend book plus it is easy to put in your briefcase or pocketbook.

New Jersey Walk Book: A companion to the New York Walk Book
Published in Paperback by New York New Jersey Trail (December, 1998)
Author: New York-New Jersey Trail Conference Sta
Average review score:

An invaluable resource
A real gem of a book - one of those that everyone with even a remote interest in its subject matter should own. I'd give it five stars if there were more maps.

Awesome
This book is a great. I've used it a number of times, and consider it one of my favorite outdoor guides to NJ. It tells you everything you need to know about a variety of trails: who uses the trail (mountain bikes, horses, hiking-only, etc.), directions to get to the trail, and where you can park (if that isn't obvious). If you are just starting-out exploring "Outdoor New Jersey" you cannot be without this book.

New York Eats (More)
Published in Paperback by St. Martin's Press (October, 1997)
Author: Ed Levine
Average review score:

Comprehensive and entertaining - fun and useful
My copy of the previous edition of this book is dog-eared and worn because I use it so much as a guide, reference and and entertainment. Levine knows New York, food, and people. He knows his stuff but he's not snooty about it. He's as much at home writing about Gray's Papaya hot dogs as he is about the finest wines

Because of New York Eats I bought this book
Ed Levine is the host of a funny and very informative local New York restaurant and food review show called "New York Eats". I have repeatly sent in emails hoping to get a free copy of his book but to no avail. Alas I recently bought this book and it has helped me on many occasions. From finding the best pizza in NYC to the best take out fois gras. A indispensable gift for someone living in New York City and surrounding areas and even better for someone about to visit and they want to know where to get the best food in the best city on earth.

New York State Parks: A Complete Outdoor Recreation Guide
Published in Paperback by Glovebox Guidebooks of Amer (September, 1997)
Authors: Bill Bailey, William L. Bailey, and Bernadette Castro
Average review score:

I was pleased with content and layout.
New York State Parks does a great job of providing detailed information about individual campsites in various regions of NYS. I especially liked the detailed description of facilities and attractions nad their proximity to the campsite.

The description of individual cabins and here settings were of particular interest to me. As a new camper, I found this book very user friendly.

Very Detailed; Excellent Layout
Before visiting New York to camp, hike, fish, boat, bike, or enjoy wildlife in one of their many state parks, pick up a copy of Bill Bailey's very detailed New York State Parks.

I am a very avid camper and hiker, and I travel all about New England, New York, PA, and VA to camp. Before doing this howerever, I always consult Bailey's book (if he has one for that state) to find the park with the shadiest and most private campsite and the steepest trails. His detail about the individual campsites are very valuable to me. He also includes detailed descriptions about the park trails, but he does a better job about that in most of his other books. I also find his maps and the charts at the end of each region very helpful.

The only real downfalls in my opinion is that his photographs arent very good, and he dosent go into detail about every park in the NYS park system, but oh well. The information he provides I find to be very valuable. Buy this book; I guarntee you'll find a park that suits you!

New York Then And Now
Published in Hardcover by Thunder Bay Press (01 June, 2000)
Author: Annette Witheridge
Average review score:

A must for anyone who enjoys past and present photos
Many old New York City Photos and one of the same picture as it looks today. Great for people that enjoy comparing things that were to things that are today.

From downtown to uptown
This book of photos should really be called Manhattan - Then And Now since all of the photos are of this Burough of New York. The book begins with photos of lower Manhattan and continues slowly uptown showing just about all of the important landmarks. This book was published after the 9/11 tragedy and some emphasis has been placed in showing the area in lower Manhattan before and after the terrorist attack.

Pennsylvania: A Guide to Backcountry Travel & Adventure
Published in Paperback by Out There Publishers (July, 1999)
Authors: Diana Rudd and Diana Rupp
Average review score:

this provocative book is filled with easy-to-follow info.
I am a big follower of all Ms. Rupp's works. She is one of the most skilled and talented writers I've ever had the pleasure to come across. This travel guide to Pennsylvania is no exception. With flowing, graceful prose, she makes a hike or canoe trip through "Penn's Woods" sound like pure Nirvanah. The book is filled with easy-to-follow information and doesn't bog you down with any extraneous stuff. If you plan to travel the Pennsylvania backcountry, this book is a must!

a must have for the outdoor lover
a well written and informative peice of literatur

Roadside Geology of New York (Roadside Geology Series)
Published in Paperback by Mountain Press Publishing Company (June, 2003)
Authors: Bradford B. Van Diver, Van Diver, and Bradford B. Diver
Average review score:

This book allows you to discover more on the road.
This book is great for day trips around New York State. If tyou like to hike , drive or bike your favorite roads and trails, this book tells a little bit more about its history and origin. A great book for kids to read when going on long trips. It is a simple way for kids to learn while not knowing they are. The book is easy to read with general knowledge terms and definitions to help with understanding, if your not a science buff. This book could be updated with the changing roadways and add som color photos.

A "must read" to know New York geology....
Brad Van Diver's 1985 work, Roadside Geology of New York, explores the state's geology in a series of self guided road trips from one end of the state to the other. Even if you don't plan on taking the tours, the well written book is loaded with well described maps, diagrams, and photos. I consider this book to be one of the essentials for a good understanding of New York's geology.

Romantic N.Y.: 165 Romantic Things to See and Do in New York
Published in Paperback by Apple Ink, Ltd. (20 March, 2000)
Author: Marilyn Appleberg
Average review score:

a new york minute
Only someone born in new york, who loves new york, could write such a book. It's a very updated collection of the most romantic places in new york. If you're looking for a spot for the intimate dinner for two, it's here. If you need to know where the most romantic settings are, it's here...and on and on it goes. The format is simple to locate something "in a new york minute". I have used the book a half dozen times already and scored a 10 on each occasion. Ms. Appleberg's descriptions are romantic themselves and paint a vivid picture of what you will find. Finding a restaurant in new york that has a fireplace already has me thinking of the Fall/Winter scenes that we New Yorker's love so much. You know that New Yorker's love a bargain...this is one!

The essential book for New Yorkers and visitors
Tired of the same old places?, Don't know where to go for something really different? This book has tips and recommendations that I couldn't find in 10 lifetimes. It is ESSENTIAL for anyone who lives in and enjoys New York, as well as anyone visiting for any period of time. The author includes terrific, romantic lunch spots, museum cafes, great places to impress a date, ideas for dates when you don't know where to go. She tells the best things to order, or to pass up. I recommend it heartily.
